The end of our senior year summer meant something different to each of us – some of us were staying in the Pacific Northwest, others moving far. But on the night of August 18, at Jackson Rudd’s going away party, we felt the same things. We felt excitement and fear and the nostalgia of goodbye. The night was coming to a close and final memories were being exchanged along with the type of farewells that had a kind of permanence to them, a permanence that we tried to ignore. We gathered around a fire, around Jackson and around Johnny. An acoustic guitar, a ukulele, and two voices were about to speak for all of us. For some, those voices had been their spokesmen for six years – they sang along. The credits rolled to a beautiful and honest evening, the two boys’ harmonies and goofy lyrics became the soundtrack. I turned on the “voice recorder” on my cell phone.
